I’m in Texas right now. My mom had been raving about a Persian kebab house in College Station. So after a morning of shopping and a (surprisingly painless) trip to the DMV to replace my drivers’ license, we rolled on by Shiraz Shish Kebab for a taste. It was indeed quite delicious.
Mom enjoyed buttery beef kebabs, while one of the owners, Mr. Afshan, was gracious enough to let me mix poultry and meat on my plate. I had a skewer of the more traditional lamb kebab, and a skewer of chicken. All of this atop a bed of rice, with some grilled tomato, onion, and a tiny bit of bell pepper. The portions were so generous, it was impossible to finish my food. I only at maybe a quarter of my meat, but all of the rice. It’s okay, more to enjoy later.
Their iced tea was perfectly brewed and cardamom infused. Sounds familiar, right 😉 ? I wonder what they’d think of my addition of rose water to Persian iced tea ? Everything was great, right down to the calming decorative fountain in the middle of the place.
Another great thing? The prices. We got two full meals, iced tea, plus one meal to go for my sister, for under $20. Talk about a serious bargain.
Afterwards, we popped by a farmer’s market. There we found a bounty of goodies like okra, watermelons, and cream peas. Plus one of my faves–fresh, local figs. Of course, there were lots of different varieties of peppers on sale as well. I picked up some of the plump, juicy figs for snacks and desserts, plus some greens for my green smoothies. Yes, I’m keeping the green smoothie tradition alive during my travels. Any place I stay that has a blender gets the green smoothie treatment.
Coming to Texas is such fun. It’s lovely to have time to chill with family, friends, and to enjoy such amazing food. So I’m off to do more of that now, but I’ll catch you guys very soon.
